Mt. Olive News

November 16, 2008

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church is:

·         God’s children who gather around God’s spoken and visible (Baptism & the Lord’s Supper) Word as His means whereby He gives new birth into His family, as well as feeding, strengthening, and equipping His family for faith, hope, and love.

·         Disciples who faithfully read and study God’s Word, individually and in groups.

·         Servants who pray for and care for others in matters of body and spirit.

To that End we:

·         Offer a variety of worship experiences to encourage our family members and also to attract guests and clearly communicate Christ to them.

·         Offer Sunday School for the children and Bible Class for the adults on Sunday morning.  We also train individuals in Small Group Bible Study for special needs or interests upon request.

·         Offer a series of take home self-study classes for those interested in becoming a member:

101 – Membership

201 – Maturity

301 – Ministry

401 – Mission

·         Serve others in our community and throughout the world through various groups, through individual trained care givers, through a servant attitude within all our family members.

Blessed

How blessed is the man who delights in the Law of the LORD.     Psalm 1:2

How blessed is he whose guilt is forgiven.                                      Psalm 32:1

The Jewish reader of the book of Psalms will find the key to the whole book in Psalm 1 – obedience is blessed. The Christian reader will find the key to the whole book of Psalms in Psalm 32. The forgiven sinner is the one who is truly blessed.

Both are in the Bible; both are true.

Everybody knows – with the Apostle Paul – what you sow you also reap.  Delighting in the Law has its benefits.

But notice the word “delight.” We are not talking about mechanical observation of the law; we are speaking of a heart relationship.

Relationship – that is key. That is crucial. There is a scene in the movie The Breakup with Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn. She says to him, I want you to want to do the dishes. He says, Who wants to do dishes? If you know the answer to that you know the key to understanding the book of Psalms.

Volunteer To Be A Prayer Sponsor

The goal of our prayer sponsor program is to link Mt. Olive members with Preschool children and their families through prayer and personal encouragement. Your commitment would be to pray for the child and family from now through May and to send occasional notes or cards. If you are interested please select a child information sheet from the bulletin board downstairs, pick up a prayer sponsor instruction sheet and have fun getting to know some wonderful kids.

DESCRIPTION: Boy sitting in father's lap poking at a Bible CAPTION: I REALLY LIKE YOUR BIBLE, DAD ... HOW DO YOU TURN IT ON?

A Lutheran is:

·         A Christian who believes the Bible is God’s inspired Word and the message of salvation in Jesus Christ is the point of the Bible.

·         A sinner who knows that, of myself, my whole life and being is self-directed, self-controlled, self-motivated, self-confident, and headed for destruction.

·         A saint who believes that, in Jesus Christ, I am totally forgiven, completely accepted, loved with an unlimited love, and destined for heaven.

·         A child of God who believes that new birth into God’s family is not the result of my own reason or strength, but of the Holy Spirit who works faith in me through the message of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

·         A follower of Jesus whose goal is to love others as He has loved us.

·         A witness who gives an example of faith, hope and love in the world so others might know Jesus and believe in Him.
