Don was born in Gaston
73 years ago in 1933 and lived on the family farm at Wapato outside of
Gaston. He graduated from Gaston High School and joined the Air Force as a
jet mechanic. He was an Airman 2nd class.
Rhoda was a Lutheran
Minister’s daughter. Part of her Father’s career was spent at the Zion
Lutheran Church. Rhoda was born in Toledo, Oregon, seven miles inland from
Newport. She attended Junior College at Concordia. She taught school for
one year in Oregon City. After Tim was older, Rhoda worked as a secretary
at the Gaston School for thirty years; this plus being a busy “farm wife”
and very active member at Mt. Olive teaching Sunday School, belonging to the
LWML where she is the President now. She also played the Church Organ for
many years. Now she is retired – sort of.
Don’s and Rhoda’s first
date was after a church skating party and after she asked her Father for
permission to go. They were married December 1958. He farmed two farms in
partnership with his Mother, then bought the farms and built his new house
in 1969. They basically were “Strawberry” farmers and did some general
farming, too. Don also drove the Gaston school bus for 43 years, the last
ten years as Transportation Supervisor, a full time job plus being a full
time farmer. When his children were younger he coached softball and taught
Sunday School.
HOBBIES: Rhoda sends
“greeting cards” to her family and Mt. Olive members. She reads, decorates
cakes, travels, and loves to take care of grandchildren. Don gardens,
travels, and collects “post cards”, and has thousands of them dating back to
the early 1900’s.
This past year Don and
Rhoda were Grand Marshalls for the Gaston “Good Old Days” parade. There was
a big family turn-out for the event.

The
Spidals have one great grandchild.
Norman was born at the
Wapato farm outside of Gaston in 1936. He went to Gaston High School. He
served two years in the Navy, then came home and worked at various jobs; in
a sawmill and as a milker. He also had his own dairy farm in Scoggins
Valley. He worked 25 years at Tektronics and later Merix and retired in
1989.
The Spidals have always
attended Mt. Olive and Norm was baptized the same day the cornerstone was
laid for the new church.
He and Raedene built the
house they are now in, in Dilley in 1967.
Raedene was born in
Forest Grove in 1941 and grew up on the family farm in Patton Valley. She
attended all eight grades of school at the one room school called “Seth” in
Patton Valley and her teacher the entire time was Mary Kurtz. The school
building is still standing. She then attended Gaston High School.
Raedene got Norman’s
address while he was in the Navy from a girl friend and so they became pen
pals. They were married in June of 1958 and have been married six months
loner than Don and Rhoda.
Raidene worked for
Tektronics after her boys were in school, for thirty years. She left in
1995 and worked for a medical company for ten years, then retired in 2004.
HOBBIES: Norm and
Raedene’s hobbies are reading and yard and garden work. She plants and he
waters. They were campers when the children were younger. Their favorite
hobby is grandkids. Raedene also is a caregiver for her extended family.

Ted and Alice have nine
grandchildren!
Ted was born at Gaston
and lived at the family farm at Wapato near Gaston. He went to school in
Gaston and then to Concordia High School. His original plan was to be a
minister, but each year when spring came, he had a need to get back to the
soil. He worked as a farmer, logger and for a nursery. The last fifteen
years he worked for Squires Electronics and retired in 2003.
Alice was born in
Tillamook. She lived with her family there on a dairy farm. She graduated
in 1951 from Tillamook Catholic School. Alice worked four years for an
insurance company there, married, and had three sons. Then her husband
passed away.
For twenty-five years
Alice worked as a Food Service Manager at the Banks school handling all the
responsibility that position entailed. Now she is a cook at Yamhill School.
Although they have dated
for twenty years, Alice and Ted just married on March 25, 2006. Ted let it
be understood that he was not only marrying Alice, but the whole family and
so all of the seventeen family members were included in the wedding party.
HOBBIES: Ted and
Alice’s hobbies are camping, walking, reading. Ted also feeds his wild life
friends; birds, squirrels, and whatever else appears.
