Sherry and Monroe Gerdes

(prepared by Annie Jarrell)

Sherry and Monroe Gerdes

Sherry lives 600’ down the hill from Mom and Dad on the home place, which is located on the Speaks Rd. off Old Hwy. 47, on the way to Stimpsons Mill.  She and her son, Monroe, have a pretty little house with a lovely yard here on the farm.  In the small chicken house and pen at the edge of the yard are Sherry’s pet chickens.  Her rooster almost talks to her, understanding her voice, and answering her.

Sherry was born at Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro and lived with her family and growing up on their Dilley place.  She went to Forest Grove High School.  Sherry was a tomboy doing farming, haying, horses, and picking crops.

She has always attended Mt. Olive Church and, of course, was baptized and confirmed there.

After high school, she attended a business school becoming an engineering clerk.  She worked in administration as Assistant to the AVP at Rogers Instruments dealing in international sales.  She also worked at Flavorland in this field for four years, and for a year for veterinarians Dr. Coon and Dr Minor.

She married in 1998.  She had one son, Monroe Gerdes Jr., born in 2000.

She and her husband operated a nursery at Thatcher and Sherry worked with the plants.  She and her husband divorced.

At this time Sherry is fighting a serious illness and is unable to work out.  However, she baby-sits brothers Eric and Marty’s children part-time and helps Dad on the farm.

HOBBIES:  She loves gardening and she likes a good cup of coffee.  Also, she is her son’s soccer and T-ball coach.

It’s a good life here on the farm and Mom, Doris, and Sherry are each other’s best friends.

Monroe Jr. is in the first grade.  He is very good at art, rides his bike, and wants to be an Olympic runner (at least for now).  He also loves to go to the movies with Mom.

His greatest feat, I believe, is shimmying up a 1-1/2” galvanized pipe, 10; high, using his hands and bare feet.
