Rod, Chris and the
three girls are a busy, active, fun family. Rod is our Board of Youth
Director with Chris’s help.
Pastor Carow married
them in 1987 and Rhoda Spidal played the organ. However, Millers were
not church attending people. They took their children to church and
dropped them off. In 1994, young Alaura spurred them into action. She
told them, “The neighbors said we’ll go to hell if we didn’t go to
church.” That’s what it took. When I asked Rod why he chose Mt. Olive,
he stated adamantly, “So we don’t go to hell!” Hurrah for Alaura and
for Mt. Olive.
Chris and her family
moved to Cornelius from Newport Beach, CA when she was ten years old in
1973. and then to Forest Grove in1986.
Rod was born in
LaGrande, OR. His Father and Mother were teachers and had traveled to
Japan and several other places. They taught school in Guam for two
years when Rod was in the fourth and fifth grades before they settled in
Forest Grove in 1972. His Dad taught at Joseph Gale until he retired
and Mother taught at Groner.
When Rod and Chris
married, they rented a house on David Hill on the “Christmas Trees West”
farm outside of Forest Grove for seven years. In 1993, they moved into
town.
Rod is self-employed
and since 1982, he has operated the “Miller’s Video Service.”
Originally, he installed the large 12’ dishes but has expanded to
satellite technician, computer wiring in business and home theaters,
cameras, etc.
Chris works for the
District Office for the Lutheran Church as an Assistant to the Education
Executive. This is her sixth year working and the commute is fifty
minutes one way.
She hopes to get a
job next year at Concordia so the girls can go there to school if they
want.
Chris’s hobbies are
reading and cooking, and of course, the families two dachshunds,
“Scooby,” and “Shotzie2.” Also, Chris is going to study
on-line for a BA degree in Social Work.
Rod’s hobbies are
golfing, hunting, fishing, and bowling.
The families hobbies
together are camping, tennis, and the game, Halo video.
MEGAN MILLER is a
college sophomore at George Fox. She is studying elementary education.
Megan will soon be going to Africa for a month. She will work with
orphans at a feeding station for the orphanages, which is a very
exciting adventure.
Last year she made
the Dean’s list. She has a 3.7 cumulative GPA. These Miller girls take
their studies very seriously.
Megan’s hobbies are
crocheting and watching movies. She also baby-sits eight hours a week.
In the summer she worked at CBAP, a camp for kids with special needs.
And of course, Megan
has a boyfriend, Matt.
KELSEA MILLER is a
Junior in High School and plays soccer as a “goalie.” Of course the
family go to watch every game because, as Chris says, “someone has to be
there to ride in the ambulance to the hospital,” which she has had to do
on one occasion. Kelsea has played soccer for eleven years.
Kelsea plans to go
to Concordia College and major in pre-med. Her GPA is 3.6 (not as good
as her sisters, but only because she takes harder subjects, she says).
Her future plans are to go on to OHSU and ultimately to work at
Doernbecker Children’s Hospital as a pediatric oncologist (cancer unit).
She likes to draw,
fish, camp, outdoor stuff. She has a boyfriend, Daniel, a cat named
“Tucker,” and a Beta Fish name, “Alpha.”
ALAURA MILLER is in
the eighth grade at Neil Armstrong School. She plays basketball as a
point guard and wing. She watches basketball and lives it.
Her plans are to go
to Willamette University in Salem, maybe major in computers (where she
has a special talent), shopping and outdoor activities.
She has not
boyfriend but she does have two frogs, “Gilbert” and “?” and a cat named
“Molly.”
