Rick and Susan are true Oregonians, both
born in Oregon. Rick was born in Hillsboro. He and his family moved to
Tillamook when he was five years old and they stayed there for his
school years.
Rick moved to Forest
Grove when he was eighteen because logging and dairy were the only
employment opportunities offered in Tillamook. Upon his high school
graduation Rick’s brother gave him a carpenter’s nail apron. Ever since
that time Rick has worked as a carpenter. First as a framer and in
these last few years as an all-round carpenter, mostly remodel working
for “Curt Copp”.
Susan was born in
Portland, lived in Hillsboro her grade school years, and in Cornelius
her high school years. She worked in the “Coin Shop” in Cornelius owned
by her Dad, and also went to Pacific Lutheran at Tacoma.
Her school career
ended after three years when she met Rick Crume. They met in January
and married in July, 1981. They lived for a while in Forest Grove, then
Hillsboro, and then back to Elm Street in Forest Grove where they lived
for twenty years. They have settled where they now live in Banks. If
not the actual house, Susan misses the memories she left on Elm Street,
Forest Grove.
Susan’s career had
been raising children until her youngest, Mary-Alice, started
kindergarten. Then she began work as a “instructional aid” at Neil
Armstrong where she still works.
Crumes have three
children:
- Chris Crume; 28
years old
Married: Megan
who is getting her Masters in education.
Daughter: Caris ,
now almost one year old.
They live in St.
Lewis where Chris is studying at Concordia to be a minister. Chris
spent one year as a vicar in Kearney, NE.
- Seth Crume; 23
years old
Seth works as a “food processor” at
Sabrusco (old Heikes) in Woodburn where he lives. Seth went to South
Western College in Coos Bay for a year. He also plays the guitar in a
little band.
- Mary-Alice Crume;
20 years old
Mary-Alice works at “Scotty’s” for Dan
and Anna Lohrer. She graduated from Forest Grove High School. Her
hobby is knitting and she has a boyfriend, Jake, who goes to the Four
Square Church across from our parking lot.
HOBBIES: Rick’s big
hobby is restoring jeeps, and he has several. However, he is thinking
of selling them since it is getting to difficult to do the heavy work on
them.
He and Susan really
love to watch old black and white movies.
Susan enjoys keeping
a journal and writing letters. She shares a journal with a cousin in
Nebraska. Each writes in the journal about family history and news and
they then mail the journal back and forth.
Originally Crume’s
attended Calvery Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. When it became too
liberal they moved to First Baptist Church. About 1990, when that
church insisted Crumes become re-baptized, Susan and Rick decided to
come to Mt. Olive, which was our good fortune.
