Dena is from
Killdeer, N.D. and a first year graduate student at Pacific College.
She was born thirty miles south of Killdeer, N.D. but lived in Killdeer
until now. She belongs to ELCA Lutheran Church and finds Mt. Olive
Church similar to her home congregation.
When we asked how
she had chosen Mt. Olive, Dena said Dr. Carr mentioned our Church in a
lecture, so she E-mailed him for directions, service times and more
information. She walked over on a Saturday, liked what she saw and
began attending. She loves our congregation and Pastor Bolken’s
message.
When she chose a
school to do her graduate school work, she interviewed at one in Chicago
and our Pacific University. She favored the smaller school in a smaller
town. Of course this green, green, beautiful area helped influence her,
too.
Dena has come to
Pacific on a N.D. scholarship called “WICHE”. They pay excellent money
that doesn’t have to be paid, if, as a graduate, she returns to the
State and works for four years.
Dena also has an
unusual work history. She is a professional, trained lifeguard. This
is her total work experience. It is a very good, well paying job and
she has also taught swimming and likes kids.
Her hobbies are
equally interesting. “Shopping” tops her list, followed by her newest
endeavor, “E-mail”. It was hard to leave her family. She is enjoying
keeping in close contact with family, friends and her boy friend who is
in his last year of college majoring to be a Biology Chemistry teacher
in Grand Forks, N.D.
Dena’s Mother is
also an elementary music teacher. Her Father once was in
tractor-machinery sales business, but has changed his career. He is now
the Vice President of a Bank.
She has a younger
sister, Ann, who has just started college at NDSU.
Oregon is the right
place for Dena since she in interested in everything and we have it all
here. Hiking and water skiing are a couple of new challenges. On a
quieter note, Dena’s new roommate is “Bailey”, her new little kitty.
Making new friends
is a fun challenge and her class at Pacific seems to be eager to bond.
When she and her friends issued an E-Mail invitation to their class to
invite everyone interested to join in a Max trip to Portland to explore,
twenty-two kids participated.
It will be
interesting to her to see what will happen with this class. All of them
seem to be leaders, opinionated and motivated. Who will arise THE
leader out of all of these leaders? The future has to be exciting and
productive for this lady, and we here at Mt. Olive are going to be
richer for having her here with us. |
